Tucked away on the backwoods of Louisiana near the Mississippi river down a secluded road there a compound surrounded by military uniforms. Within this compound is a museum which used to house many ill patients. Leprosy a deforming disease,
accompanied by unimaginable pain as your feet and hand are absorbed back into your body. During the tour you walk through and see items that were used to treat and entertain these patients. The stories are of good times but It makes me wonder what else. The pessimist in myself thinks that this couldn't have been all roses. These patients were kept within the compounds of the surrounding area. It was secluded, if they did wonder they were imprisoned and punished. The patients were not free to find love and those that snuck. Those that loved one another and became pregnant, the children were took away after birth. It was said that the patients were not allowed to marry one another. The guide stated that sometimes the patient would run away and be returned to the compound married once they were caught. There was a published book that depicted love but I still wonder if the patients were treated as if they were freak shows... With that being said I do think they had a large property with many amenities that the typical person wouldn't normally have. The ball room was great and would have made the perfect place to get married.
